RAF Collyweston was built in 1917 as No.5 Training Depot Station, in 1939 it was aborbed as a satellite for RAF Wittering (pretty much across the road). In 1941 Wittering and Collyweston’s runways were merged to make a 2 mile long runway, albeit grass rather than asphalt or concrete.
As far as I know, it was decommissioned as an active base in 1945 but continued firstly as a bomb store until the end of the Cold War then as a training site for the RAF and cadets until, well it still is. Didn’t know that bit until afterwards. There has been a history of “illegal ravesâ€, graffiti and vandalism.
It was a nice explore and done with The Wombat.
