Travelling to Scotland regularly I pass these old buildings travelling up and down the A1. So I stopped by on the way home coming home a few months back. I visited the technical site and was quite pleased to see quite a complete set of buildings still standing. I was going to go see the old firing butt, time was against me though. A nice relaxed visit for me on the journey home to stretch my legs. The buildings had been used for agricultural use in the past, this is common with these buildings.
Raf Gamston was a satellite airfield for RAF Ossington and used for training on various aeroplanes. It consisted of three runways and thirty heavy bomber handstands. It consisted of four T2 hangars and B1 hangars and was designated a class A airfield. Training was done firstly on wellington bombers. Several other planes were used later on including the Hawker Hurricane. Many accidents occurred at the airfield, many were from the airfield being used as a safe haven for bombers in trouble. With the end of the war the airfield was used for motor sports for a while. It was reutilised in 1953 as a satellite airfield to RAF Worksop and once again as a training airfield but with jets like the Gloster Meteor. It closed again 1957, but was reused during the seventies and eighties as a satellite airfield to RAF Finningley as a landing ground. The site was finally sold in 1993 and reused as a private airfield for small private planes. The airport was owned and run by Gamston Aviation Limited. It was bought in 2021 by Thatcham Research and they would do motor testing alongside with the airfield still being used. The original airfield towed has been restored to a residential building.

Plenty of large Nissen huts about.
Was pleased to see they had the Air Ministry Bomb Trainer still in situ. A little scramble through the overgrowth and I was in.
The top of the building with the main plinth for the aiming equipment.
The bottom bit is full of wood.
Normally near the bomb trainer is the turret trainer. And over the way sat one, I popped my head in but was rammed with crap.
The parachute store.
What could be a maintenance shed/garage.
To the side is a series of buildings. I could get in most except a tiny bit.
Some large bit of machinery for feed or grain.
A few more random buildings.
Outside the main site is a large hut with a few old cars in.
