Well last night was back up RAF Upper Heyford finding my next building to check off my huge list. So I headed to the old Chow Hall and Lamplighter Inn which was the main social gathering area for the single air crew. Its situated in the middle of the non airfiled side surrounded by the Air Crew barracks. The building is massive and is of the same design as the Old Hospital at RAF Bicester which is now where the house the parterns for the Militarys Uniforms.
Brief History
The Building was built in the 1930's as the main canteen for the Air Crew stationed at RAF Upper Heyford. Prior to the 1960's there were three squadrons: 3918th MV Sq., 3918th Food Service Sq., and 3918th Supply Sq. Then they mergered into one squadron called: the 3918th Air Base Squadron. Around 1962, they split up again into about four squadrons. Transportation Squadron, Food Service Squadron, Supply Squadron, and Support Squadron.
The Lamplighter Bar and Education Services was added in the 1980's
Downstairs was the the main food hall, Kitchens and Bar area then upstairs was the Education Services.
Here's the Hall in 1978
