Here's the abandoned Spanish Railway Station and Bridge in Baul!

The population of Baul in the early parts of the 20th Century was many thousands. But in 2010 it was down to 188, mainly due to a loss of the railway but also due to the general depopulation of the interior of Spain.

This station (built 1894) hasn't been restored.....it remains as it was when it closed in 1984. So it's very authentic with a few old relics still in place.

In the days of steam there passed iron ore trains from the (El Marquesdado) mines near to Guadix. In addition, lead was mined nearby and brought to the station in wheelbarrows. In wetter times, sugar beet was grown and sent by train to the sugar factory in Caniles.

There is still some rail equipment remaining there as well as Baul railway bridge! This is a complex wrought iron structure that was assembled in 1907 to complete the line between Guadix and Baza.

The last train to run across the bridge was on 31 December 1984.......and the line was then closed. To add a bit of excitement, parts of the footway across it now seem to be giving way!
