The Royal Ordnance Factory was a WW2 Ministry of Supply Explosive Factory. The factory was built to manufacture the propellant cordite for the British Army and the Royal Air Force. It also later on produced cordite for the Royal Navy. It was the biggest munitions factory the MOD had, with up to 20,000 workers. The site closed down and is now being made into a new housing development.

Housing, ALLWAYS more ruddy housing. Sad - I visited this place when it was all up & running.

I had a look around last weekend. There's still some things that are worth looking at. The press plants nearest the housing will be gone within a few weeks.
Over next to the active BAE site there are still several presses and a rolling plant, plus the glycerine plant on the hill. There's a really easy way in too from the housing estate, obvious if you look. There's a BAE base next to their gate house where 4x4s for the non secure site are parked up. No one there out of weekday working hours.
