History

Rugeley B power station was commissioned in 1970 and closed on 8 June 2016. It had an output of 1,000 megawatts (MW) and had a 400 kilovolt (kV) connection to the national grid. The B station provided enough electricity to power roughly half a million homes.

In February 2016 it was announced that the power station would close in the summer of 2016. An announcement by owners, Engie blamed a deterioration in market conditions which included a fall in market prices and increasing carbon costs.

Rugeley Power Station ceased all operations on Wednesday 8 June 2016 and demolition is expected to be finished by 2019.

Our visit

Other than Lostock and failing at Ferrybridge I hadn't managed to do a power station. So you can imagine how hyped I was to get in here.

So I headed down the M6 to our first stop. A decent pub that made some awesome steak and ale pie. Met up with @Bolts, @fb, @Moose and a couple of other lads who aren't on here I don't think. Had a good natter and a couple of pints then we made our way to meet @slayaaaa and make a quick stock up of beer n scran at Tesco before heading into the power station.

It was a lovely clear night and I only managed the one quick snap before heading in.

After finding our way in, navigating in the pitch black was a fun task with the size of the group and trying to keep the use of our torches down to a minimum.

A few head bangs later we'd made it into the boiler house. Wow. The scale of this place is unreal and pictures just do not do it justice. We mooched around what seemed to be a million flights of stairs before coming across the turbine hall and the control room. We stopped in a small office had a few beers a quick chill before making our way back up to the boiler house to get our heads down.

A few lads went back down exploring. Fat chance of me doing them stairs again so a few Brewdogs it was! Ideal.

Setting my hammock up next to the window wasn’t my brightest of idea’s. yeah it looked great as the sun slowly rose through the windows, but Jesus Christ it was cold. If it wasn’t for the beers not a chance would I have slept.

With the sun poking through a few of us were awake packed up and making our way up onto the roof for some epic sun rise vibes. Whilst up there we noticed secca doing their rounds and could make note of where and when they were patrolling.

Making our way back down, the late night lot were flat out a kip so we left them to it whilst we went off for a wander.

I believe these are starters?

Onto the control room. I’ve seen many pictures of it before and I love the sort of striving for a futuristic look these places go for. Almost like the Jetsons.

Unfortunately as we all know it has been well stripped now and not much remains.

Moving on, we mooched around the offices which apart from furniture were pretty much empty. We found one box with some pretty cool slides in though, mainly schematics and diagrams but a few the odd old photo of Rugeley A I think?

We headed downstairs to the main reception and into a conference room and canteen area. It was wide open here and with secca patrolling we had to be quick so my pics are a bit noisy.

We headed back into the turbine hall to go and check the workshops and stores out.

There’s some serious tooling in here. Some reyt big drill bits for the lathes massive taps and dies etc etc A lot bigger than what I’m used to spannering on the buses.

Went for a wander around the ground floor of the turbine hall, found where the gas turbines once were chilled out on a roof for a drink n some lunch and waited for it to go dark to make our way out.

Good update, its been nearly a year since i was in there and very little has changed. Power off and gas turbines gone looks about it! I wish the likes of Cockenzie and Didcot had this 'derelict' phase.. (Then again, Tilbury did and i never made the most of that.)
