Happy New Year folks.. This is my first post, still getting used to photoshop and my new camera, so bear with me. That being said, I can take a few punches so let me know what you think.
Now, for a little history,
South Middle School was built in 1939 as a magnet school for the visual and performing arts. At the time it was a revolutionary design that supposedly shaped how public schools were designed and built for the next 40 years. I believe the school closed it's doors and has been derelict since 1987 but I'm not sure how accurate that date is..
In any case, there were plans to convert the art-deco school into 116 townhouse lofts, but those seem to be dead in the water. Interior was pretty stripped, and there was a lot of crap graffiti everywhere.. But there were some gems (graffiti and otherwise) mixed in as well. Found some pretty amazing stuff lying around, and there was even a bunch of Cold-War era medical supplies in the fallout shelter.
Anyway here are my pics, I can get my buddies pictures from his camera if theres any interest. Full Flickr Set Middle School, NJ
1. Front of the School
2. Courtyard
3. Front Entrance (Not an access point!)
4. Classroom. I like to imagine thats how the desks would have been set up
5. Gym. They still had rings hanging from the ceiling! I've heard they are keeping this space as a resident gym.
6. Bleachers still in situ
7. Some idiot tried to set the gym on fire
8. Locker room
9. I'm pretty sure the school had more than 289 students enrolled at that time...
10. Huuge old boilers
11. Backstage
12. Theater
13. Oldie Lightboard
14. Nice full theater, I was pleased to hear that they are retaining this as well.
15. Weird little series of rooms with arched doorways, a fireplace, and false windows with lamps behind them. My best guess is a home-ec class room?
16.The Caf
17. Kitchen
18. Dishwasher. These things really can't be too cheap..
19. Mmm nuggets
20. Skatepark!
21.Obligatory roof shot
22. Of course, a john shot
23.Purty
