The Asylum was built in 1852 and enlarged on several subsequent occasions.
The hospital was set in grounds of 120 acres which included gardens, farmland and a burial ground.
Administration of the hospital passed to the National Health Service in 1948, and by the early 1960s it was known by its final name of St John's Hospital.

St John's Hospital itself was closed in December 1989 with the remaining patients transferred to other establishments. The site was sold for housing and most of the buildings apart from the central block were demolished.

I would wager that this is one of the most visited & reported-on sites in the country, but it took me and @Gsxrwayne up until the last weekend of freedom in March to get it done, despite a previous attempt!

The 'south front' - the external is from a previous, gloomier effort as there was a whacking great cherry-picker parked in front during the more successful sunny visit.

Good stuff mate, glad you finally managed to get it done. Still looks basically the same as I remember it 8 years ago!

Certainly one of the less knackered long-term-derp asylums still standing. Like others, I can't understand why it isn't on the tourbus route.

I don't think a lot of the 'exploring with' dumbasses have ever ventured into Lincolnshire, they'd rather stick with the easy tourbus 'millionaires mansions' down south.
