We’ve done a couple of Urban Explores now; obviously the usual Thornton Hospital, Baldovan Hospital, we had a look today at Craigtoun House Former Hospital but that’s all boarded up with new CCTV cameras and is apparently being modernised so we steered clear.
This is my second report on here, so hopefully it’s ok!
We parked up around lunch time and wandered round the Victorian buildings until we found a concealed entrance.
This section, and these buildings, of a currently working hospital, are abandoned. For some reason, the hospital is still functioning, with extensive buildings and grounds, with these old Victorian buildings left empty, stripped out of almost everything. There are multiple buildings here, but only one with any access that we found and we didn’t venture too far due to the roof missing on part and a very squint window, which made me feel like the outer wall had slipped and was therefore structurally unsafe. You can actually see the slant of the window sill in my photo on the stairs and at the top of the stairs above our access point the roof had caved in. We didn’t venture far along the corridor, because we weren’t sure how safe the structure was, and we were fully aware it is on the grounds of a fully functioning hospital.
The original hospital was opened in the late 1800s as a District Asylum named Fife and Kinross District Asylum and underwent extension in the early 1900s. It became a centre of excellence in Children and Family psychiatry in the 60s, and newer, purpose-built buildings were erected around the grounds, providing more modern facilities, and eventually abandoning the Victorian buildings, although the date is uncertain. A very interesting place to get a glance at, shame the hospital isn’t still using these buildings; could be a beautiful inpatient ward with grand bay windows and lots of natural light.

Lovely pictures, some parts seem exceptionally tidy! I love the classic chair/corridor/crumbled plaster shot and those floating metal walkways have always appealed to me. Great stuff :thumb
