For many years Surbiton Hospital has been threatened with closure.

In 1876 the wealthy residents of Surbiton bought the land and placed a covenant on it that forbids “any trade or business whatsoever (including a school)â€￾ on any portion of the site.

This proved to be the stumbling block the council had to deal with before they could turn the site into a school.

The way round it was to call the covenants that exist 'pescriptive' and rule that they have, in effect, already been breached by the building of Surbiton Hospital. Thus they no longer apply :confused

Surbiton Hospital was built in 1934 and is to be completely demolished very shortly.

Running hot and cold water, electricity, lights left on, heating on full blast, and windows open, no wonder the NHS is in a state.
