During the Second World War and onwards, there were built a large amount of coastal artillery batteries along the Swedish coast. During the 1970s, the threat of invasion from the Soviet Union against Sweden in the highest degree a reality for the Swedish Armed Forces.
A decision about Sweden's defense in 2000, meant that the fixed coastal artillery would completely closed down. Most of the plants were scrapped. Some batteries were preserved and also at least one S- location. (Also called the central facility, in practice, a small local command center)
This facility had three artillery batteries, Bofors 7,5 cm m/57 , in " serie3 ". Nuclear weapons protection had been prioritized and the distance between the batteries were expanded. With the exception of electric power, every batterie were built each unit as a full-function facility. Since the method of concrete structures mounted directly against the rock was found to provide poor protection against ground tremors were replaced with elastically suspended steel buildings that were provided with adequate EMP protection. Also the central facility (now called S- place) was built in adjustable cut and cast again with concrete.
The central facility, in practice, a small local command center, where it compiles measurements and sends orders to the batteries . It is here combat control and fire control converge. The central facility, is four stories high, backup power system, EMP protection, and ventilation to protect against ABC weapons. Of course there was also a small workshop, kitchen, dining and sleeping areas.
An impressive facility, one of many.... I understand what a large portion of the defense budget in Sweden during the "Cold War" was used to....
