Evening everyone,

These are some photographs from the end of last year that I only just got around to adding into my photobucket account. The photos were taken using a 35mm Pentax ME Super.

The Thompson family began in waste paper recycling in 1883. In 1900, the business moved to Little Salkeld.

Over the years the mills changed their products and technology to meet the demands of the time. There were many uses for the paper and board that they produced. After the move to Little Salkeld, supplies started to become scarce and so they incorporated waster paper into their supply line.

The two World Wars brought a scarcity of materials and the millers turned to using moss and straw as well. New machines were installed in 1960, which hastened the production process, but unfortunately the costs of the modern manufacturing and pressure of foreign competition meant that the company was no longer able to compete. In 1996 Thompson's board mills went into liquidation and was subsequently taken over by Activecraft.

The mill was finally shut down in 2003 after a prosecution under the Water Resources act 1991 for not having discharge consent from the Environment Agency.

Here are some of the photographs.
