Towers

So much Art Deco! 2016 is looking good so far, more of this pleaseeee.
Loving everything here, it's such a compliment to 30's/40's cinema architecture. Spent a long time here having a laugh. I ate a whole pigeon here to stop it stealing my cans, long story...
We ventured around and I didn't see all of it at all. Above, behind and below the stage, the lighting, more rooms upstairs in the projector room, the stairwells were nice, but forgot to find the light switch :S and so much more.
Did a mad craw to get in and mashed up all my limbs, so so so worth it however. Gonna need to see some more cinemas in East London, Highams park dammit!
Sorry the pictures aren't great as usual, enjoy regardless!

History

Located in Hornchurch, Essex, today a district to the east of Greater London. Opened as the Towers Cinema on 3rd August 1935 screening the double bill programme, “The Phantom Light” starring Binnie Hale and “Vagabond Lady” starring Robert Young.

It was built for and operated initially by the independent D.J. James Circuit and had interior decorations by Clark & Fenn. The Towers Cinema had a fully equipped stage and dressing rooms and a cafe/ballroom.

By 1939 it had been taken over by another small independent circuit, Eastern Cinemas who in turn were taken over by Oscar Deutsch’s Odeon Theatres circuit in 1943. It was re-named Odeon from 26th June 1950.

The Odeon closed on 6th October 1973 screening the James Bond movie “Live and Let Die” and was converted into a Top Rank Bingo Hall. It became a Mecca Bingo Club and the building was in excellent condition when it was closed on 1st November 2015. Reason for closure was the building had been purchased by Lidl supermarkets to be demolished and a new supermarket will be built on the site.

Thankfully that last bit is out of date, the council have stepped in and stop Lidl's from committing such crime. It's in limbo at the moment and inevitably it'll sit like this for too long and fall into disrepair. I'll send an email to Wetherspoons and get them to buy it up, they always do a fantastic job on these. :D
