Just taking care of local business with this one which I’ve passed many times on West Derby Road, wondering, without much enthusiasm, what was inside. It’s certainly one of the uglier churches in Liverpool.

As far as history goes I haven’t been able to find out much, not even when it closed as a church, although there is some mention of it being used by a local scout group.

Old maps show a Methodist church at this location since at least 1890, with the present building appearing in the early 1960s; the two storey extension at the back housing games rooms and classrooms was added in 1966.

It’s due to be demolished soon to make way for mixed use redevelopment.

FREEHOLD DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY SITUATED IN A PROMINENT LOCATION ON A MAIN ARTERIAL ROUTE
• SUITABLE FOR A RANGE OF POTENTIAL COMMERCIAL USES, SUBJECT TO PLANNING CONSENT
• APPROXIMATE SITE AREA 0.15 ACRES
The property is prominently positioned fronting A5049 West Derby Road, in an established suburban commercial district. The immediate surrounding area comprises mainly mixed use, ground floor commercial premises and upper floor residential accommodation with residential terraced housing to the adjacent side streets. The property is within close proximity to Tuebrook Police Station and lies directly opposite Newsham Park.
The premises comprises a purpose built Methodist church with ancillary accommodation to include offices, workrooms, concert room and reception facility. We understand that the original structure was built in the 1960's with the three-storey element fronting Alton Road being built some time shortly afterwards. The entire site comprises a rectangular plot of land set back slightly from the footpath with small rear yard area giving access to the fire escape.

Yup, in the unlikely event anyone is interested, planning application 19PM/0586 has the demo details, including the asbestos removal.

That is an impressive ceiling!

Interesting to see evidence of scouts in there, I attended a scout group in a church, it was really good and I look back fondly at the time I spent there.

Come to think of it, I was a cub/scout in a church hall as well - had forgotten all about that!

Odd that simple googling doesn't bring up any pictures of the interior given that people must have been christened/taught/married here for decades - bound to be some in parish newsletters etc.

Thanks for letting me join the forum. I will enjoy exploring.

Great report, very interesting. The pictures brought back vivid memories of this church. My dad was the church treasurer who raised the money for the original building. And then later for an upper story extension. We were married there in 1967. Both my son and daughter were christened there. My son remembers bursting into tears at a nativity and the naf barn dances. As a newly qualified bricklayer, I worked on the upper story extension for a short time.

My picture shows how it looks fairly recently.
