Visited with: The Loon, DocFunk, Vivo and Headhunter.

At last!, we had access to the rest of this tunnel! I scouted this place a couple of days ago with my brother in law, access wasn't as bad as it first appeared to be, especially when your dressed for the part :D

Most of the pics from me are from the inital scout, I decided not to put them up sooner and invite some of the north-east regulars to visit before making the report.

Here's my pics:

Just below one of the access points, emergency escape breathing apperatus.. uh oh..not a good sign, lol.

2007_0618009.jpg

some of the workmen's gear that are woking down the tunnel at present.

old archways leading into the main tunnel.

just as you enter the main tunnel to the right (leading back up towards newcastle) is this security gate, guess that section isn't going to be open to the public when they eventually start the official tours. Luckily it wasn't locked :D

2007_0618023.jpg

this is what greeted us towards the end of the tunnel towards newcastle.. so real shoddy brickwork here, with some hollow pipes which look like they go all the way though..

2007_0618030.jpg

..a bone!?!..

2007_0618032.jpg

..an original chemical toilet, bottom completely rusted, few strands of hay in there (no horrible supprises) that's one thing I can say about this section, it has more original features than the north section..

2007_0618034.jpg

..looked like the workmen had put some stuff on the roof here and were trying to dry it with the lights..

2007_0618054.jpg

..the workmen were putting a thick wire mesh in on the walls and ceiling and then putting cement over..

2007_0618086.jpg

2007_0618057.jpg

..an original light fitting complete with switch.. never saw any in the north side either..

2007_0618070.jpg

at the south end were two manholes relatively close together, me and vivo tried this one, couldn't budge it..

2007_0618083.jpg

and this one, which me and doc tried which wouldn't budge either. The laddters on this one were well dodgy, all of the supports keeping it to the wall were gone, it was only secured at the top and bottom, and easily flexed, lol.

and then came the visit with fellow UE'ers, this gave me a chance to grab a couple more pics and even try paiting with light..

2007_0620011.jpg

another shot of the passage leading down in to the main tunnel from street level.

2007_0620017.jpg

this was a bucket being used to catch water dropplets coming from the ceiling. This section was more damp come to think of it.

2007_0620028.jpg

..another of the corridors leading to the main tunnel.

an 3 pics using the painting with light technique, not bad...
