I went on a Berlin trip last weekend to go and visit some sites to photograph. Our lack of organisation this time, caused us to falter on directions which hindered our timing so we couldn't visit as much as we wanted to, but still managed 5 sites in a couple of days and 25km of walking... I have since been out to buy walking boots after that trip! :D

Anyway, this site was Vogelsang. A Russian military based used to house their nuclear weapons. The site was built in 1951 with around 15,000 soldiers and civilians. 550 buildings along with tanks and missiles. Not much of this remains now, but wandering around the site you come across a building here and there. Some of which contain a few Russian memorabilia but nothing of significance to prove any nuclear goings on!
All the buildings are quite spread out from each other, which looked like they were food halls, a sports hall, meeting places, dormitories and a bunker. A huge space was surrounded by large holding areas, presumably for a lot of tanks!

If you visit here, be prepared for a lot of walking in the forest! Luckily we managed to get 4G in some places to find our way around. And on a side note, the trains go from the same platform that you arrive on (even the station is derelict!).. and are every hour :thumb

Some photos of our Berlin adventure in Vogelsang...
