Report - Whitecliff Tunnel and various bits - Forest of Dean - Gloucestershire - Feb 2022

Whitecliff Tunnel

Whitecliff tunnel near the town of Coleford located in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire was part of the Coleford Railway from 1883 to 1917 and the Severn and Wye Railway from 1917 until its closure in 1976.

Very little available online in regards to the tunnel but after seeing a conversation online we took a trip up, was good to get another undocumented tunnel on the map.

I believe the surrounding quarry was used as a 4x4 centre in the past but also seems to have plenty of activity on site with various units.

Nice find! The name of the one loco 'Ruston' is ironic, given it's dishevelled state the poor thing! The tunnel looks to be in pretty decent condition.

Ruston is the name of the manufacturer not the name of the locomotive - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruston_(engine_builder)

Not too overgrown at the tunnel portals considering built in 1870s and then no trains for last 53 years

Edit: Those refuges look large and unusually deep, I've only ever hidden in one once when a train actually came past and it wasn't as generous as those or at least not how it felt but it was a years ago so maybe memory playing tricks (Berwyn Tunnel, odd there's no report here for that one?) Edit: sorry just realised as a working railway it'd be illegal and not a report in this section
