2 Tunnels - Roman Lakes Marple

Following on from an earlier report from the Roman Lakes in Marple, I thought I'd post a few more of the many tunnels dotted about the area. What they lack in size they more than make up for in being amazingly photogenic :thumb

The first is situated at the far end of Lakes Road, opposite the unfortunately named Windybottom farm :D

A rather attractive stone bridge, but what lies beneath ?

A slip down the embankment and into the river reveals a small tunnel, around 30 metres in length,
sporting a small waterfall and two separate tunnels branching out on either side.

On closer investigation, the left tunnel is extensively backfilled, or collapsed

whilst the right runs around 10 metres, although I suspect it ran much further

Atop the waterfall and looking upstream, the top end is fenced off

Looking back down stream and towards the millponds

heading downsteam we pass the largest of the millponds which feeds into this

Which in turn, splits two ways into...this

which meets up with this, slightly further downstream

along the way I came across a small well type structure

a quick drop down reveals yet another tunnel

which is once again backfilled or collapsed and no more than 3 ft in height

Looking back up towards daylight and the embankment along the side of lakes road

continuing downstream and another in-fall and the promise of another lovely tunnel

a fair old stoop at around 4 ft with shallow water and fairly easy underfoot

heading in and down towards a glimmer of light

the small doorway and steps lead up to a fenced off entrance on the enbankment

the tunnel drops away and the flow gets deeper as we head to the outfall

An impressive little waterfall feeding the river Goyt and the end of another water-tunnel

Another enjoyable and chilled little explore, still loads more to see too..
