So; Archcliffe Fort. It goes back a long time and was changed a bit in the Tudors and the Spanish Armada as well as the Napoleonic period and WW2. We’re pretty sure this is Napoleonic and it consists of 6 rooms. We believe that the middle rooms were magazines and the outer rooms had cannons in to defend the ditch. There’s evidence of an upper floor that has been demolished to create the road above as it can be seen when you look up in 2 of the rooms. Judging from bricked up firing slits in the wall above next to that road, we assumed this was a caponier due to the fact the some other caponiers had cannons on the lower floor and firing slits on the upper ones. However, we then realised this couldn’t’ve been the case as there was a gate from the same era above. Yet after further research, we saw black and white pictures showing that the fort had a walled off area outside the gates in the past and there were even rooms around the firing slits at some point.
