Blackburn Royal Infirmary was first opened in 1865 but there have been extensions built in 1965 and 1980 to increase the number of beds & improve services.

The foundation stone was laid on May 24th 1858 and it was built on land at Hollin Bank, which was purchased from Joseph Feilden Esq for £3,200. The money for the actual building came from various sources. Extra wings, a Childrens Ward and a Nurses Home were added in later decades and a lot of that was paid for by the Harrison family.
When the Royal Blackburn Hospital on Haslingden Road was extended a few years ago, parts of the Infirmary were demolished and the rest was left to rot.
After viewing previous reports from here, its obvious that the place is literally a shell of its former self... due to vandalism and theft, which was disappointing to see. From looking at 'past' pictures from years gone by (compare the first pic from its heyday, to the second one in its current state) its very disheartening to see such a lovely building left to rot and ruin... but that is the way of things it would seem. However, its still 'one off the list'... and its a hospital
and in a way, I guess Im still pleased I made the effort to go down and have a look.
