Cefn Coed Hospital

Another well-known one, but I hadn’t seen anything crop up on the forum since the last reports in 2018 so decided to give a more recent update.

History complied from its wiki page:

The hospital was designed by George Thomas Hine and Hallam Carter-Pegg using a compact arrow layout and was officially opened by the Princess Royal as Swansea Mental Hospital in 1932. It was used as a casualty hospital during the Second World War. In March 2015, the health board's new low-secure mental-health unit, Taith Newydd, opened in Bridgend, replacing some of the old wards at Cefn Coed. In 2015, the NHS announced that the phased closure of Cefn Coed Hospital would continue for the next three to five years, with several decommissioned wards planned for demolition that year.

In June 2019, the hospital was one of the filming locations for the Channel 4 drama, The Accident, starring Sarah Lancashire. The series aired on the 24 October 2019.

During our second spontaneous trip to the South of Wales we spent a morning finding a way into one of the 3 main hospitals in the area. Not much had changed inside which was nice to see, apart from extra decay in some areas.

Inside the now locked off ward section.

Onto the main hospital areas where we began at the main hall.

For me, the corridors are the real highlight of this place and were a pleasure to shoot.

Off of the corridors were multiple wards.

There were plenty of other rooms in and about the hospital, such as the main kitchen, the chapel, the laundry room. Sadly the room with the x-ray equipment was locked and inaccessible, even from the outside courtyard to which it faced.

Main kitchen.

One of the rooms next door to the x-ray room, this the closet we could get…

And finally, the main entrance. We did attempt the water tower a few different ways but with the sunsetting and every option proving no avail, we exited shortly after.
