and since Im stranded in North East for time being with lack of funds for road trips, it just took a text from Dweeb saying i should check it out that gave me the incentive to pop along and see it for myself.
Spent a couple of hours in the place and the projector room was my favourite... although once in there, heard the unfortunate sounds of people on the roof on the other side of the boarded up windows we were in, who were admiring the church opposite and also commenting on how old the cinema was they were sitting outside... After controlling the urge to voice 'ghostly sounds' from through the boards.. we decided to tiptoe back out and wait downstairs in the bar and surroundings, til they eventually left, before going back up to take some photos.

The Palladium Cinema opened on 18th March 1929 with Alice Terry in "Garden of Allah". Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels It was the first cinema in Durham licenced to operate on Sundays. On Sundays they were restricted to one evening performance and the programme had to be approved by both the Chief Constable and the Bishop of Durham.
The Palladium Cinema was damaged by a fire on 16th January 1934. It was refurbished and re-opened on 5th March 1934 with Leslie Henson in "It's A Boy".
ThePalladium Cinema was refurbished in late-1967, re-opening with "The Bible-In the Beginning". The cinema closed in 1976 and operated as a Bingo Hall until 1982 when it became a Church.
It has now stood empty since 2004.
