The history.

It started life as Eastmoor Approved School in either 1854 or 1874 (not sure) and was taken over by Leeds CC on 1st April 1973. It was then known as Eastmoor CHE, that is Community Home with Education. It closed in 1990 although the Secure Unit, which is a separate enterprise is still running. Because of its low profile I was suprised to hear that it housed certain 'high profile' boys obviously to keep the public from guessing where they were. I suppose i can say - as his identities been changed now but Jon Venables was here at one point during my dads time.

on with the tour...

The pic below is the old "surgery" where boys would be seen daily and/or at need, for administering medication, dealing with cuts etc. It was also for dental inspections when the dentist visited and he would see 30 or 40 boys one after the other. My dad remembers fixing the hydraulic chair neumerous times. I wouldn't sit in this chair!

The complex is a square structure with a courtyard in the middle. This is a main feature that i remember clearly, i would bring my 'clod buster' R/c car here.

To say how old the building is and hasn't been used for 17 years, there wasn't much structural damage other than a large portion that had been burnt.

These were the residents rooms, there were holes in the floor everywhere from fire damage

The garage, no idea what this is, but i remember coming in here and working on a motorbike with some of the lads who lived here, this is where i first learnt what a spark plug is.

on to the kitchen with a hatch to the dining room , where my dad obviously spent a lot of his time.

we hurridley went on to the swimming pool, which i know Oldboy was dying to see having missed it on previous visits. To get there we went down this fantastic tiled corridor.

so there you have it, a place that has been done many times before but hopefully with a bit more insight, i for one loved seeing this place again after so long. Apparantly, they are to close the new high security section next to eastmoor, flatten the old one and build another brand spanking new one! why dont they just restore this great old building?

Thanks again to oldboy

I couldn't fit all the images on here so Full set on flickr is here

cheers for reading

I was an inmate there and you have brought back so many memories.. That dentists chair was also used as a barbers chair as well.
The Garage. I spent all my time there & worked in there for Boss Smith. He got me through my 1st part of 'The Union and Cheshire Institute'
in Motor Engineering. When I was 16. Smashing chap & I will be eternally grateful to that man.

Ray..I was there in 1961 or 1962. I was trying to remember the name of the Polish cook.....Mr Lenko? His wife did the sewing and clothes and stuff.
