This Medical Centre has been classed as being both above & underground depending on your viewpoint
The Firth brown Steelworks date back to 1902, and this Centre was obviously used for the treatment of the workers, and for Medicals etc over the years. According to various Websites of bygone Sheffield, this Centre was but one building in a bigger complex, rumoured to include an Ambulance Station and a rifle range amongst others.
This seems to be hard to confirm even from surviving ex-workers, as does the actual location of the centre due to it"s unique positioning shall we say
Some time after the 2nd World War the centre had the surrounding walls extended to fully encompass the building, when it was also back-filled and at some stage a Car Park was created on the supposed Bomb proof Medical centre.
Over the years rubbish and factory waste has been dumped into the Medical Centre blocking up the original entrances and also being dumped where the original concrete roof has failed ( in some places it"s failed with mechanical help ) and as an overgrown site this has both confused and prevented people from even knowing it"s existence, especially from the thousands of people that pass by it every week
Anyone who"s been here knows it"s either a fun filled entrance or exit....or both, and i certainly had both on my Solo visit. It took quite a time locating via many Websites and i wonder how many have actually managed to track it down, rather than being given it"s location ?
My October visit was bloody freezing outside with rain & sleet and it wasn"t any warmer inside, even after Heart bursting entrance :laugh I had seen the odd report on the Medical centre but i was not ready for the lack of light inside the centre. You gain an insight from peoples images, but are obviously unaware how much lighting has been used to create the final image. Luckily i had my new P7 and 2 sets of batteries along with tripod for much long exposure & light painting.
I was in here for ages, gaining my night vision & then burning my eyes out with the P7, but must admit i was in awe of the place the whole time i was inside. And have to agree with others that something like this should be a Museum ( well before the rest of the artifacts go )
Couldn"t decide what to upload so here goes, as mentioned these are RAW long exposure and lit with natural or P7 light.
Hopefully someone likes them, especially since my shoulder was never the same again after being in here, hence my shoulder surgery last week :laugh
