Haslemere Prep School was originally a large house known as The Heights, occupying an elevated position at the top of a steep hill overlooking Haslemere and the countryside beyond. It was designed by acclaimed local architect Herbert Hutchinson and built in 1899, Herbert Hutchinson was behind the designs of over 100 unique houses in the local area in the same period. In the 1950s the building was extended (and I believe it was extended again much more recently) and it became a prep school before closing in 2016 due to falling student numbers. Interestingly the front facade of the larger extension was built in the same style as the older portion of the building, presumably it's exposed position on top of the hill where it can be easily seen meant they didn't want some faceless modern monstrosity like is revealed around the back overlooking the town. There is currently a local campaign going to save the older part of the school due to it's significant local connection, and the last housing plan developers submitted comprising 25 homes on the site was rejected in 2019.
I'd tried this place before a couple of years back and it was well sealed, however things do tend to change and it was markedly different this time. I've not done a sizeable school like this since my last trip to the States so it was a good feeling to sink my teeth into a larger school on home soil again. Inside it's a bit of a mess, with a mix of idiot damage and some decent natural decay, but that really doesn't surprise me sadly.
Thanks for looking
