Report - Henley’s air raid tunnels, gravesend kent, Feb 2024

History
Built in 1939 by the telegraph cable company WT Henley, these tunnels were presumably designed to be used by the workers. This shelter had six entrances, ventilation and lighting to hold around 2,000 people. These winding tunnels were impressively partly built into the cliff face and included a first aid post.

This was a spare of the moment thing really, I was working close by with @richiemelon and 4 others when I told them about the shelter we decided to take a look to see if it was accessible and it was! I visited this place back in 2017 but I never took any photos as I was pissed so it was nice to get some photos this time.

Nice photos. Been years since I went. Nice to see they are still accessible, as I know there where plans to block them at one point. There is a great video of a meet there years ago. I believe @Wevsky filmed it?

We had just finished work and all had our hi viz’s on 🤣, at least we blended in walking through the building site lol. It hasn’t changed since the last time I was there either mate. Hopefully it stays that way 🤞🏻

Ive done a few with hi viz and hard hat on when there are nosey neighbours about. Never been challenged. Bletchley was one.
