Soooo, I know there's loads on this place, but its slowly getting converted/demolished so we went to visit. I went about a month ago, but got caught by security. The site is now split in half by an inaccessible corridor and the construction office. We still managed a good 5 hours, saw the pharmacy, the education block and one of the ward blocks. The main tower block has been sand blasted (only at the front, so it looks pretty when you drive up) but still looks empty, although there are new shutters on the inside of the lower windows. Our stomachs were rumbling, just as we decided to leave parts for another day and head for a pub lunch, we were caught by security. I think if one stood on the other's shoulders they still weren't as big as me, so they were very polite and seemed quite happy when we said we were leaving anyway.

After lunch we headed to Bramham House - report here.

Opened on the 8th October 1888, the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum Menston as it was then known, became High Royds in 1963. One of the last remaining psychiatric hospitals of it's kind to be still functioning when it closed in 2003.

More history and some photogs over here and a story from a former patient here.
