Craigo prospered until the 1870's as a textile village with a bleachfield and flax-spinning mill. There was a station and railway sidings to serve the village industry. The decline of the textile industry has been taking place since the late nineteenth century when the development of steam ships increased trading throughout the British Empire and meant that more cheaply produced alternatives were available from abroad. The railway now passes straight through, the mill has closed, the school has closed and only about 200 people remain. Even the post box has shut! Signs are that the mill began importing raw materials, then probably the finished product before closing.
