The Cheshire Lines Committee, a product of the 1860's, was owned by the Great Central, Great Northern and Midland railway companies. One of its aims was to break the monopoly that the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire companies had on Liverpool.
Originally, the CLC built a line between Brunswick(south Liverpool) and Garston(some 3 miles), using running powers to get to Manchester, until their own line was opened in 1873. Meanwhile, their Brunswick terminus was so inconvenient that the line was extended in tunnel to a new Liverpool Central Station, which opened in 1874.
Agreement was reached with the Mersey Railway Company to construct a low level station under the Bold Street part, which opened in January 1892.
The station survived until a decision was made in the 1960's to concentrate services into Lime Street Station, which left only the Gateacre service still using it. Plans had been made to link the CLC to the electrified lines from Exchange Station and to extend the former Mersey Railway into a city centre loop. To facilitate these plans, Mersey trains terminated at James Street and the booking office for the Gateacre line was moved to a wooden hut on Platform 3 after Saturday, 17 July 1971.
The next day, one of the gates was open, so I nipped in and got some pics, before being ejected by the railway staff that were stripping the place! So here is the death of a once great station.
