History:
Chad is actually three local newspapers rolled into one. Our story begins way back in 1858 when the Mansfield Reporter made its debut in the town, courtesy of founder Mr John Langley. The first two issues were printed in London, but afterwards switched to the Nag’s Head yard in Mansfield. A second paper was launched in the town in April 1871 when the Mansfield and North Notts Advertiser was born, founded by Mr John Linney, grandfather of Mr Ian Linney (Charirman of W & J Linney Ltd) whom until December 1995 was the publisher of the present day Chad. Completing the trio of local newspapers, the Mansfield, Sutton, and Kirkby Chronicle, launched in 1895 by Mr Fred William. Land was bought on Newgate Lane, Mansfield, in 1919 and a few years later a modern printing works was built boasting the largest battery of composing machines in the town.
Mansfield Newspapers reached their next milestone in April 1952 - the birth of the Chad. The Advertiser and the Chronicle joined forces to become the Mansfield and North Nottinghamshire Chronicle Advertiser and four years later the third newspaper merged when W & J Linney Ltd bought the Reporter. It quickly became known as Chad - taking CH from the Chronicle and AD from Advertiser.
New Technology and hard work have helped Chad reach new heights of success in the past 20 years or so. Based at our Newgate Lane headquarters, Chad switched from broadsheet to tabloid in 1981 and took a bright new image using state of the art technology. Circulation soared as we offered the very best to our readers and advertisers.
In December 1995, the Chad, a family owned affair was acquired by Johnston Press, then the 5th largest weekly newspaper publishers in the United Kingdom and are now 2nd (beginning of 2007), in a £20 million deal. Despite becoming part of a Plc, the unique local character of the Chad has remained unchanged. In May 1998, Chad entered the world of multimedia publishing with the launch of its website Chad On-Line.
Chad is not only one of the best weekly newspapers within the United Kingdom, it is committed to maintaining strong ties within local communities served by Chad. Chad not only represents a digest of local news and sports coverage, but it is probably, the single most important source of local information in the North Nottinghamshire area.
