Visited with WhoDearsWins and Seffy

So after attempting to do CWM Coke at first light, failing drastically and being chased round a housing estate for an hour by a man in a van we decided to head to Talgarth for a picnic.. The site is well documented on here and I've shamelessly pinched WhoDearsWins' history from his last report. we had a great time wondering about and taking pictures although a run in with a (un)happy welsh farmer on the road did add a few complications..

The Mid Wales Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in Talgarth, Wales It opened in 1906 and was formerly known as the Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum or Mid Wales Counties Mental Hospital. It is in echelon style (narrow arrow) and at its peak could serve 1,000 patients. However, nearer the end of its life, in 1995, this had dwindled to 168. The site was also home to the Mid and West Wales College of Nursing and Midwifery and the Powys Drugs & Alcohol Council for substance misuse
As part of its services the hospital provided treatments for the elderly mentally ill; rehabilitation and continuing care; occupational therapy; day care facility; psychology; reflexology; physiotherapy; electro-convulsive therapy, chiropody and psychiatry.
With new health legislations coming into force in the 1980s/90s and 'Care in the Community the entire hospital was wound down during the 1990s and closed for good in 1999. Some facilities moved into nearby Bronllys Hospital (formally South Wales Sanitorium).

Anywho... Photos! Everyone has seen loads of photos of this site so i thought i'd be a little more arty with my editing and give you a few interesting shots. I hope you enjoy!

ah nice one :thumb I have often been told this is not worth looking at anymore, but after seeing your pics I tend to disagree. Shame you couldn't make CWM, it is rather special and that is coming from a bird who isn't into industrial derps much :D

Yeah deffo! second time I'd been busted there in 3 days! :/ someone on site must have been tipped off by a dog walker about us though as it was too quick and in a too discrete location to be coincidence.. either way I'm now good friends with Max the German Shepard, He's a lovely dog and wouldn't hurt anyone :)

Whoever told you that is having a laugh. It's probably the most complete asylum left. Granted it's got better security these days. It still mystifies me that it doesn't get much attention when people still do the likes of Rauceby!

Great pics HR, captured the place well

I wouldn't say there is any "official" Security.. more just a very angry welsh farmer and his butch welsh mates..

Good piccies sir :) A great day this was, as most of the Welsh road trips are.

If I never see those blokes at CWM/Mid Wales again, it'll be too soon. Unreasonable miserable Welsh sods with absolutely nothing better to do!

Ok well it's the best security the place has ever had though. Those days of parking in the admin courtyard and waking in one of about 50 holes in the place are long gone!

Wish I'd visited the place sooner! bet it was cracking 4-5 years ago.. either way, it's still charming now, but i would have loved to have seen the piano and a few of the other rooms before the floors collapsed..

Lovely,

Some stunning pictures there - no.8 with the chair and the coloured floor is the standout for me.

How did you get the chair to levitate in pic 3?

Hmmm, some work and some don't IMO. Not so sure about the sepia tint and overall dark look, but hey, something different is always worth a look, and they do have an atmosphere for sure.
