A bit of history:

The hospital was designed by John Giles and opened on February 18th 1903, originally under the name Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum, but in 1921 it changed its name to the Mid Wales Asylum. It was originally designed to cater for only 352 patients, but by the end of 1925 there were 455, leading to serious overcrowding. In 1994 the number had dwindled to around 140.

With new health legislations coming into force in the 1980s/90s and 'Care in the Community' the hospital was wound down and the entire site closed for good in the mid 1990s. Some facilities moved into nearby Bronllys Hospital (formally South Wales Sanitorium). This is still open and run by the NHS Powys Local Health Board.

The site was sold off to its previous chief medical officer for pittance, which was somewhat controversial in the local area.

Work has started in the top car park opposite the Chapel and next to Admin, with various vehicles going in and out of the site with a diversion from the main road that takes drivers through the hospital grounds.

We also discovered that the signs reading 'Warning: Guard Dogs' weren't lying this time, when sure enough, as we moved past admin, we were greeted by one behind the fence, although it only seemed to focussed on the admin block.

Anyway, on with some photos :thumb :
