I've been working up in Newcastle and on the way back home I decided to stop and take a break

Built in the 1800's by Napoleonic Soldiers, this man-made lake dominates Roundhay Park, Leeds.

Originally this area was heavily mined for Coal, Iron & Clay dating back to the 12th Century, now Waterloo lake (12-15ha) occupies this age old land.

The lake is fed by the Wyke Beck from the North, with a more modern overflow system being constructed in recent times, replacing the old waterfall and drainage system.

I've not seen this one posted for a couple of years but I've always fancied it so popped in :)

The smaller of the two lakes is called Upper Lake, featuring impressive fountains, an island and a waterfall that leads down to Waterloo Lake via a ravine. It is five acres in extent, but only 3 to 4 feet deep. The Upper Lake is on much higher ground then Waterloo Lake, which was constructed by ex British soldiers who had returned from the Napoleonic wars and thus named after the Battle of Waterloo. They were unemployed, so Thomas Nicholson provided work and income to landscape a former quarry. It took two years to build, and has an average depth of 60 feet deep and covers 33 acres
