In about 1504, Thomas Roydon came to East Peckham and enlarged a house called Fortune. It became known as Roydon Hall and later passed by marriage into the Twysden family which owned it until 1837. Since 1974, however, the house has been the headquarters of the Age of Enlightenment which encourages the practice of transcendental meditation. It closed down in 2003 . it remained empty and derelict and was on the At Risk Register.
