Hi and thanks for looking this was my first solo report, really enjoyed scaring the teenagers that came in smashing the place up i was making my best ghost noises i could muster i am by no means an expert but it seemed to work as they left faster than shit off a shovel screaming and are probably in therapy now.
I got this info from ***********
Many people mix these buildings up but essentially there are three different Grade 2 listed buildings.
Firstly St Josephs Orphanage, Theatre Street, built and opened 1872 by Maria Holland Trust and run by the Sisters of Charity our Lady Mother of Mercy, nuns that came from Holland to open and run the orphanage.
Secondly, St Joseph's Hospital, Mount Street, referred to by all the locals as Mount Street Hospital was opened in 1877 again by the Holland Trust and run by the same order of nuns. However, completely seperate building and, at no time in its existence, was it an orphanage.
Thirdly, the R.C. Chapel on Theatre Street, designed by James Mangan and opened in 1910 was specially build by money raised for use by the Hospital and the Orphanage.
When the orphanage closed in 1954, the hospital took over the building and built a small link passage to link both buildings. The hospital used the orphanage building as a nursing school and it continued to be the convent for the order of nuns, as it had always been when it was an orphanage.
When the hospital closed in the 1980s (not sure of exact date) all the three buildings were purchased by the present owner who then converted the Orphanage building into a private residential elderly peoples nursing home. No original features left in that building from when it was an orphanage. He did not use the Chapel nor the hospital building.
He also owns the 1930s extension on Mount Street and the 1950s extension on Theatre street which was the geriatric wing for the hospital. Planning application is in for conversion to apartments, but doubts have been raised whether this will happen. The buildings are deteriorating badly and I fear for their future. Grade listing doesn't really protect them from neglect and potential destruction.
Note that the hospital and the orphanage were run and administered as completely separate institutions even though both were run by the same order of nuns and funded by Maria Holland nee Roper.

I am new to photography so any tips would be appreciated

Nice one :thumb

Just do us one little favour - edit the title to include the month/year of your visit - vital when it comes to archiving :thumb

(to edit the title click on 'edit post' - then click on the 'go advanced' option - and it will let you sort it)

When we did this it seemed so well sealed we almost left before we spotted a way in. It's quite saddening to think that it's so doable now that teenagers are just casually wandering in to smash it up.:(

Nice report - some interesting bits of history I hadn't seen elsewhere.

They do seem pretty keen on keeping it locked down judging from the work they have done with the concrete bricking. First time I went here everywhere was open and accessible no bother!

I went there last night at around 11:25 got in a strange entrance and when inside spent about it 10-15 minutes scouting out some rooms. Almost fell through the floor twice and found the main office which had a trolly in which was a bit weird so we turned back and started heading back and saw a large white door which had no handle, after closer inspection the door had tons of scratches with hits of what we think was blood, we tried to get in the door but was unsuccessful. We turned and started to walk fast as we got close to the exit we heard a door slam and footsteps right above us from the rooms we had just been in. we cut out flashlights and tried to get out without been seen by whoever or whatever was there we got to the exit and just before I got out (I was the last person) I saw a door open slowly at this time I was terrified and got outhe as fast as I could and got going...

Warning to other people something bad is going on in that place be careful when you go.
