My first time checking out the Tees Transporter Bridge was with Sho. We attempted to free climb the North side of the bridge, but after getting half way up it was feeling a bit sketchy with the wind blowing a gale, so we promptly got back down and took the easy route :p It’s a really smart bridge. It reminds me somehow of the at-at out of star wars. I just love the shape and structure. A proper old bridge. I returned a couple of weeks later for a re-visit with Bigjobs, Horus, Ojay and Squirrell911.

Myself, Horus and Model A hit Newport on another separate occasion.

Tees Transporter Bridge Info:

Constructed in 1910-1911, the Tees Transporter bridge spans across the River Tees with a length of 851ft. (259 metres), and standing 225ft. (69 metres) tall. It carries a ‘gondola’, which is suspended below the deck via cables, across the water - taking 90 seconds to cross. The gondola can carry 200 people, or 9 cars, or 6 cars and a minibus. The bridge can still be used today.

Newport Bridge Info:

Opened to traffic in 1934, spanning 270ft. (82 metres) across the River Tees, Newport Bridge consists of two 182ft. (55 metres) lifting towers and a deck. The deck could be lifted using two 325 HP electric motors, and in the event of a failure a 450 HP petrol engine could be used. If both systems failed the deck could be lifted using a manual winch - but it was estimated that "it would take 12 men eight hours" to complete the movement by hand. The bridge saw its final use in November 1990, and is now decommissioned.

Proper pieces of engineering.

When we were climbing down the ladders to leave, we realised how blatantly obvious we were - lit up like a christmas tree!
