Coryton Power plant

For now I'll just report the power plant, Seriously worth it's own report for sure. We managed a fair amount of the site with the light so if you'd like to see some more of the rest of the site register your interest and I'll do a round 3.

So why have 5 seperate turbines of different ages and even different makes? I don't

understand. Presumably they're different sizes, maybe they needed to expand and did it turbine at a time? All I know is that it gives great variety and definitely a turbine hall not to be forgotten. I couldn't tear myself away, haven't much experience in turbines or knowledge but everytime I wander up the steps to a hall my jaw drops every time without fail.

Not knowing what to expect this surprised me, I expected a pair of uniform neat turbines, not a mish mash of 4 in various colour. It's an amazing site on its own and stands out even amongst the endless tangle of pipes it once gave life to just outside.

Sitting up on the gas tower the other night with Maniac I spotted the 2 uniform chimneys in the distance and got thinking, few hours of research later I was 70% sure it was the 732MW Power plant mentioned in various articles. Promising MR a visit, I told him to prepare for Turbonz. I promised and I gave. Enjoy round 2

History

The site which is in Coryton Essex United Kingdom is run by Coryton Energy Ltd. It opened in 2002 and was built by Bechtel, is owned by Intergen, based in Burlington, Essex. MA USA, and cost £470 million.

It is a CCGT type power station that uses natural gas. It has two ABB Alstom GT26 gas turbines from which the exhaust gas leads to two heat recovery steam generators. These power one steam turbine. The station connects to the National Grid at the nearby 400 kV Coryton South substation.

The boiler design is a villager type. Optimised running in marginal markets is not possible due to these weaknesses.

Nice work, some lovely turbonage there. The control room is a little on the disappointing side, but impressive site on the whole.

Just to point out that none of that history is relevant - It all applies to the 732MW CCGT power plant in the south west corner of the site.

What your looking at is the 1950s Boilerhouse and Powerplant which was built as part of the original refinery.

I didn't think the figures/statistics matched up correctly... Thanks for that man, I'll re-write soon.

Nice one @slayaaaa if I hadn't been so tired on my way home from London I'd have joined you for this, I must go back soon! Wish we'd realised this was there the first night we went, would have waited for sunrise and done it then. I had a feeling there was more to the site than pipes!
