Haddon Tunnel is 1058 yards long, built between 1860 and 1862, the Tunnel was built because the Duke of Rutland didn't want to see trains from his stately home Haddon Hall. The Tunnel was built using cut and cover and normal boring methods. In 1861 five men was killed was a section of the Tunnel collapsed on them. There are 2 types of refugee built into the walls, the original tall narrow ones and the more conventional type what was added in 1914. In some places in the Tunnel is only 3ft from the surface. There are 2 springs that run into the Tunnel, they have plans to reopen the Tunnel as part of a public footpath. Visited with Explorer dog BINKY :thumb
