History
Known as Prisoner of war camp 116 was built in 1941 and located in Hatfield heath, just outside Bishops Stortford.
The camp mainly housed Italians until about 1943-1944 where it held German and Austrian prisoners aswell. It was known at one point the camp housed 750 prisoners
The prisoners had a relatively easy lifestyle here (Unlike the English prisoners in the German POW Camps) and could do voluntary work in the near by farm land in Harlow, they were picked up by the Land Girls and each prisoner had an allotted farm where they would work at.
Today
Today the site sits among a small housing estate and an egg packing facility.
Only a small part of the camp is accessible and from what i've read on a few threads is that this part is the guards area and the egg facility is the prisoners quarters.
It's in a pretty bad state, but hey, what can expect from a 63 year old site made from wood and bricks!
Also on site were a few old 'Hillman' Cars, one of them from what i can see had only done 1,755 miles! Although they were all rusted up they were still incredible to look at and see the fuel gauges still intact and the steering wheel still moving the wheels!
The Explore
So about 2 hours after seeing a thread about this place i found myself with my backpack on and putting the place in the Sat Nav. As this was only 25 mins away i thought it was definitely worth a mooch around!
As the usual guys weren't around i thought i'd do this on my own, but mentioned it to @DRZ_Explorer and another Non - Member so they decided to tag along.
We weren't disturbed for the whole 1 hour and 30 mins we were there for, the only people we saw were local residents and the people who worked in the egg factory, but they didn't seem to care about our presence!
Also got to try out the new DSLR, so i hope you enjoy the pics! Again, i took over 150 pics so if you want to see more just let me know!
