A soap plant, opened around 1934 and gone derelict in 2008, after years of management awards and spectacular results and innovations. Its peak capacity was 30,000 tons of beauty and industrial soap per year, which didn't keep it from spontaneously combusting, falling over, and exploding, throwing 63 people out of work.

It took a bit of work to find, and is not in great shape, but still retains enough industrial pipes and levers and gizmos and widgets and things to make it a nifty playground. That, and the heavy wind banging decaying window panes against each other, and the cargo ships puttering by outside, make it a pretty spectacular place.

I didn't see any sign of human activity lately, although I know a few of the French photographers have been around. It's a classic case of undefined ownership after an industrial bankruptcy - the location's not interesting enough in terms of transport logistics to bother, nobody wants to pay for tearing it down, and it's such a mess that there is no conceivable way it could be used for anything.

And it smells like soap. Mmh.

The outside. It's up against a sizable cliff.

I went there with a group of elegant, urbane, intelligent, cosmopolitan, and generally AWESOME SUPERMEN, and we decided to tidy up some of the incredibly messy shelves a bit:

Hilariously, compare the grimy, black layer of crap coating everything, and the brand of soap they produced

with their current site. lol.

More, as always, at kosmograd dot net.
