Wellington Monument,Somerset

The Wellington Monument is a 175-foot-high (53 m) triangular obelisk located on a point of the Blackdown Hills, 3 km (1.9 miles) south of Wellington in the English county of Somerset. It is a grade II* listed building.

The monument was designed to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Construction of the original design commenced in 1817; a revised and cheaper design was eventually used, though, and building was completed in 1854. It is now owned by the National Trust, who closed the monument to the public in 2007, owing to safety concerns. Surveys have shown that extensive renovation work will be needed to reopen the internal staircase to the viewing platform. As of 2015 the work is still ongoing.

First off, this is hardly an epic. It's more in here in case anyone else wants to go and have a poke before it the scaffolding goes or they alarm it etc etc.

Anyone who has driven down the M5 and paid attention to their surroundings may have noticed a small needle on the hill between J25 and J26. That, or read the book 'The M5 Sites Guide' (yes that is actually a thing). Well this is it! It's a very popular site for dog walkers as we soon found out - even when it's pitch black. How Somerset :p

A few years back we tried out luck and failed miserably... Spot @TheFamousThreeGoTo

It used to be possible to get a tour that takes you to the top, naturally, hence I said this is no epic. This was stopped due to safety concerns sadly, however it's just that one better to see it that high externally. Just over a month ago scaff started to climb its way up it:

To the point it was completed and now the monument looks like this:

Well in guys!

As Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington said "The whole art of exploring consists in getting at what is on the other side of the fence."
