Okay please be kind its my first "Report"
Spanhoe was built between 1943-44 and remained in use by the USAF till 1945 it consisted of 3 airfields sited high above the surrounding countryside on a plateau. After the war it was used by the Crowland Gliding Club till parts of the upper airfield were broken up for use as gravel today the lower airfield is still in use for light aircraft and several of the original buildings still remain on this site however a large portion of the upper airfield still remains hidden by woodland and access roads between the airfields long gone, however access to the upper airfield is still quite easy a concrete access road remains between it and a road to the nearby village of Wakerly and indeed the road actually forms part of the local public rights of way network as a footpath (although still big enough for a car). I came across the airfield 2 years back when lost in the woods on my bike i came out into the clearing and soon found my bearings when i checked the OS map using the access road to get back to Wakerly there are still remains of some small buildings at this site but have long since fallen into disrepair and many are derelict and large portions of the original runways still exist.

The access footpath is a bit of a trek uphill as you can see its the the original concrete road surface from the war.
At the top of the track there is a small bunker like structure, i didnt really stray off into the undergrowth as I hadnt come prepared it was kind of a spur of the momment thing on the way home.
