Report - Welsh Asylum Roundup – Spring 2022

Spent a fair bit of time in Wales over the past couple of months and managed to visit or revisit the remaining asylums (sort of). I won't try and rehash the history for all of them, but I've linked each hospitals' respective page on the County Asylums website coz they do it best really!

Cefn Coed Hospital

Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea - County Asylums

Stopped off here on the way to Swansea beach without much hope of seeing inside. Found my way in after a couple of laps of the site and had the place to myself for a few hours.

St Cadoc’s Hospital

St Cadoc's Hospital, Newport - County Asylums

Visited one morning with @raisinwing, went smoothly enough despite having to hide in a toilet cubicle for a while. Obviously this is still a working hospital with some 'disused' wards, so it felt a bit naughty being here tbh.

The chapel was also open on this occasion

Mid Wales Hospital

Mid Wales Hospital, Talgarth - County Asylums

Solo visit to Talgarth while on the way home after my birthday... Not much changed in the 3 or so years since I last went apart from the roof of the hall getting worse.

Okay so Whitchurch is a bit of a cop out because these pix are from last August with @raisinwing and @Humpa but I never did anything with the photos, so including them here for the sake of completion!

North Wales Hospital

North Wales Hospital, Denbigh - County Asylums

Swung by Denbigh with @Mr Budge while in North Wales recently for a wander, an enjoyable morning despite there being nothing really worth seeing there. Few close moments with Mr Security driving around the site but other than that a pretty relaxed time.

Fantastic report. All 5 of them have something to offer. Only had a brief visit to Denbigh so nice to see what Wales has to offer asylum-wise. Which is quite alot!

Nicely nicely, Cefn looks very peely, even nicer than Whitchurch in a way. The later seems a bit of a mission lately so good you go in back in August.

Crazy to think how many asylums there were in Wales.. another 3 in South/Mid Wales on top of this selection!

Maybe there was a disproportionate number of crazy people in Wales
