Visited with Cookiebizkit, Luke106, Silverhatch and Fire-Fly.

These tunnels have had various uses over the years including shorts brothers seaplane works, public air raid shelters, and then by blaw knox a heavy machinery company, not sure of the date of closure, most recent paperwork indicated 1977.

looks like the lift took a bit of a hammering!! surprised its still retained any shape with that weight of rubble (infilled?) on top of it!

I just love the tunnel blocked with bags of concrete. Couldn't be arsed to mix it eh, so just blocked it with as many bags as possible.
I can just imagine the conversation. "I reckon it'll take 100 bags of cement to block this tunnel, you get one with it lad, I'm off to the pub." Gaffer comes back and finds the YTS apprentice has neatly sealed the tunnel by stacking the bags!
Brilliant.
Probably the best british build of the last century!

but they backfilled with liquid cement
nearly 3/4 high of tunnel 20ft long
